The Honinbo is Japanese Go's most storied title, tracing its lineage to 1612 when the Buddhist monk Nikkai (later Honinbo Sansa) founded the Honinbo house at Jakkoji temple in Kyoto. For over three hundred years the Honinbo name passed from master to disciple -- not by blood but by merit. In 1938, the last hereditary Honinbo, Shusai, donated the title to the Nihon Ki-in to be awarded annually through tournament play. Sponsored ever since by the Mainichi Shimbun, the title match was historically best-of-seven; from the 78th edition in 2023 it was reduced to a best-of-five and the winner's prize cut from 28 million to 8.5 million yen as newspaper revenues declined. Iyama Yuta holds the modern record with eleven consecutive Honinbo titles from 2012 through 2022, surpassing Cho Chikun's previous mark of ten.
