The tournament featured a 64-player field with seeded players from China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan competing in a knockout format with a best-of-five final. Ke Jie won the inaugural title in December 2017. The tournament was part of the wave of Chinese-sponsored world championships that emerged in the 2010s.
