About this tournament

Japan's national amateur championship, run by the Mainichi Shimbun and the Nihon Ki-in since 1955 with the Kansai Ki-in supporting. Twenty-one regional qualifiers feed a summer knockout in Tokyo, joined by the previous champion, the honorary amateur Honinbo and the winners of the student and junior titles, all playing at forty minutes plus thirty-second byoyomi. The champion carries the title of amateur Honinbo for the year and earns a game against the reigning professional Honinbo, a pro-am meeting that has been part of the calendar since 1963. Only the 2020 edition has ever been missed.
