Established in 1961 by the Sankei Shimbun newspaper, the Judan ("Tenth Dan") is one of Japan's seven major titles, with a winner's prize of roughly 7 million yen. Its name evokes the pinnacle of Go rank -- historically, 9-dan was the highest official grade, so "Tenth Dan" symbolically places the champion beyond even that ceiling. The Judan was long defined by its unusual double-elimination preliminaries, where a player who lost in the winners' bracket dropped to a losers' bracket and the two bracket winners faced off to decide the challenger. After the 49th edition the format was simplified to a twenty-player single-elimination preliminary, with the eventual challenger facing the defending Judan in a best-of-five title match.
