Founded in 1975 as the successor to the Nihon Ki-in Championship, the Tengen ("Origin of Heaven") takes its name from the center point of the Go board -- the intersection at the very heart of the 19x19 grid. Sponsored by the Sankei Shimbun group, it offers a winner's prize of approximately 12 million yen. The format is a single-elimination preliminary followed by a best-of-five title match. Rin Kaiho (Lin Haifeng), a Taiwanese-born player who dominated Japanese Go in the 1960s-80s, set the first dynasty with five consecutive titles and earned the rank of Honorary Tengen. Iyama Yuta later surpassed that record, winning the title eight times.
