About this tournament

The Women's Meijin is the female version of the Meijin title, with "Meijin" meaning "master," historically the highest honorific in Japanese Go. Established around 1989, the tournament ran continuously until losing sponsorship in 2020, before being revived for its 32nd edition in 2021. Notable champions include Kobayashi Izumi and Chinese-born Xie Yimin. The tournament's temporary suspension highlighted the financial precariousness of women's Go competitions, but its revival demonstrated the enduring significance of the Meijin name in Japanese Go culture.
