Founded in 1988 by Taiwanese industrialist Ing Chang-ki, the Ing Cup is often called the "Olympics of Go" because it is held once every four years. It features a knockout format culminating in a best-of-five final, with a champion's purse exceeding US$400,000. The tournament is famous for mandating its own special ruleset (Ing rules) and custom-designed equipment, including stone bowls that hold exactly 180 stones for a unique counting method. Champions include Cho Hun-hyun (1988), Lee Changho (2000), Chang Hao (2004), and Fan Tingyu (2012). In 2024, Ichiriki Ryo became the first Japanese player ever to claim the title, a landmark moment after decades of Korean and Chinese dominance.
