Each prefecture sends its champion team plus individual entrants to the Ki-in's Tokyo headquarters for three days of team and individual play, boys' and girls' divisions separately. A perennial powerhouse roll — Nada, Kaisei, Nanzan — reflects the fact that Japanese school Go lives mostly inside academically selective schools, and a good share of the individual medallists turn up a few years later in the insei ranks.
