Founded in 1996 by Korea's LG Group and organized with the Chosun Ilbo newspaper, the LG Cup is a major annual international Go championship with a total prize pool of 1.3 billion Korean won (champion receives 300 million won, roughly US$230,000). The format is a 32-player single-elimination knockout, with 16 players qualifying through preliminaries and 16 receiving direct invitations. The final was originally best-of-five but was shortened to best-of-three after the 10th edition. The tournament has produced iconic moments, including Lee Sedol's breakthrough 2003 victory over the seemingly invincible Lee Changho. Chinese players have dominated in recent years, reflecting China's growing supremacy in professional Go.
