About this tournament

The Wangwei (棋王, "Chess King" or "Go King") was a major Chinese professional Go title, also known as the Five Cows Cup after its sponsor. The title denoted supreme mastery and was contested through a challenger format with a championship match. It was one of several Chinese titles that established the competitive framework for professional Weiqi in the 1980s and 1990s, as China built the institutional structures that would eventually propel its players to world dominance.
