The Women's Meijin is the female version of the Meijin title, with "Meijin" meaning "master" -- historically the highest honorific in Japanese Go. Established in 1988 with Miyazaki Shimako as its first champion, the tournament ran continuously until it lost sponsorship in 2020, then resumed for its 32nd edition in 2021 under new backing from the Fuji Evening News and Nippon Life Insurance. Chinese-born Xie Yimin dominated with nine titles between 2008 and 2016; Fujisawa Rina has since become the dominant figure of the modern era. The tournament's brief suspension reflected the financial precariousness of women's Go competitions, but its revival demonstrated the enduring weight of the Meijin name in Japanese Go culture.
