The Fujitsu Cup (1988-2011) holds the distinction of being the first true world championship in professional Go, breaking the sport out of its historically national tournament structures. Sponsored by Fujitsu and organized with the Yomiuri Shimbun, it ran for 24 editions. The format grew from 16 to 32 players with a single-game final and a winner's purse of 15 million yen. Its inaugural champion was the flamboyant "Cosmic Go" stylist Takemiya Masaki. The tournament's cancellation in 2011 marked the end of an era for Japanese-hosted international Go, as the sport's commercial center shifted toward Korea and China.
