Founded in 1996 by Korea's LG Group and organized with the Chosun Ilbo newspaper, the LG Cup is a major annual international Go championship with a total prize pool of 1.3 billion Korean won (champion receives 300 million won, roughly US$230,000). The format is a 32-player single-elimination knockout, with 16 players qualifying through preliminaries and 16 receiving direct invitations. The final was originally best-of-five but was shortened to best-of-three after the 10th edition. The tournament has produced iconic moments -- Lee Sedol's breakthrough 2003 victory over the seemingly invincible Lee Changho, and Zhou Junxun's 11th LG Cup win in March 2007 over Hu Yaoyu (2-1), the first world Go championship ever taken by a Taiwanese professional. Chinese players have dominated in recent years, reflecting China's growing supremacy in professional Go.
