New lines you play here are read to 100 visits — quick, but shallow. A deeper read finds longer, stronger continuations.

Thirty-two undergraduates come through qualifiers in eight regions to a straight knockout, played at one hour plus thirty-second byoyomi, so a single bad afternoon ends a campaign. The university clubs treat it as the season's centrepiece, and its roll of champions is a reliable early sighting of players who later turn professional or anchor Japan's amateur teams. Kanazawa Moriie of Kyoto University holds the record with four straight titles from 1978.
