The KAT Systems Cup was an international Go tournament that drew professional players from multiple countries. International open tournaments have been essential to the globalization of professional Go, creating competitive encounters between players from different national traditions and playing styles. The tournament contributed to the growing international calendar that has expanded steadily since the first world championship events launched in the late 1980s.
