Women's Honinbo

The Women's Honinbo, established in 1982, is the female counterpart to the storied Honinbo title, one of the oldest and most revered names in Go dating back to a 16th-century Go house. The tournament carries a winner's purse of 5.5 million yen and uses a best-of-five title match format. Fujisawa Rina has dominated in recent years, achieving six consecutive defenses and establishing herself as one of the most dominant women's players in Japanese Go history. The Honinbo name carries enormous cultural weight in Japan, as it originally referred to one of the four great Go houses that trained players during the Edo period.
