Founded in 2018 by the Nihon Ki-in with the Tokyo property firm St.GRANDE W, the SGW Cup (SGW杯中庸戦) is defined by who may enter rather than how it is played: professionals aged 31 to 60 who have never won a major title. 中庸 — the Confucian "golden mean" — names both the tournament and its champion, and the Nihon Ki-in bills it as the battle of the middle-aged, a second chance for career-long contenders who never quite broke through. Sixteen survivors of the online preliminaries play a four-round Swiss over two days at even games, on NHK-style thirty-second moves. Men and women enter together and rank is no barrier: Okuda Aya reached the final at 4-dan.
