Nanyang Cup

"Nanyang" (南洋, "Southern Ocean") is the centuries-old Chinese name for Southeast Asia and the maritime world of the Chinese diaspora that settled there. Singapore, the Nanyang's cultural capital, has long been a crossroads where Chinese, Malay, Indian and Western traditions meet — and where weiqi survived and spread among overseas Chinese communities. The first world-class Go tournament jointly run by two national weiqi associations, the Cup deliberately frames Singapore as a third pole alongside the East Asian heartland, and links the modern game back to the seafaring networks that originally carried it abroad.
